On the 8th of January 2016 17, Year 9 catering students, went on a tour of Sainsbury’s supermarket, Hyde Estate Road, West Hendon. The aim of the visit was to provide students with some industrial experience that would help to consolidate classroom learning, preparing them for their coursework and written exams.
On arrival students were welcomed by Deputy Shop Manager, Karen, who gave the students an insight into her job as well as talking about the day-to-day running of the store.
After a cheese tasting session, students were given a guided, behind the scenes, tour of Sainsbury’s storage units and were able to appreciate key temperatures in food safety. They saw some food processing machines and the products that are made with them. Karen was keen to answer questions about what Sainsbury’s is doing to demonstrate their commitment to recycling food and packaging materials. Other topics that were covered included fair trade produce sourcing (food mile) and staff training.
